Barbel Fishing on the 10/10/10

In the dam of the blind, the one eyed Barbel is king. This was a one eyed Barbel caught by Ettiene. It seems to have been born this way, cause there is no scar tissue.

These two Barbels were caught at the same time by Ettiene and I. Good old Double Whammy!!!!

Night time is always good for Barbel. Its when the small fish sleep and the big feeders are on the move

Looky Looky. I was so surprised to have caught this beautiful Carp. I used slow sinking crust by an over flow.

Carp Fishing in the Western Cape

I was born into freshwater fishing.
Since I can remember I have always dreamed of catching the perfect Carp. This one here was caught during Winter time when the local dams were experiencing heavy rainfall.
Carp are bottom feeders and rely on sucking up their food. When the water is cold the small Carp tend to sit still and conserve energy while the big feeders are on the move.
This Carp above is a Mirror Carp and was caught on a piece of floating bread crust. This is unquestionably my favorite fishing method for Carp. I love seeing those rubber lips coming up for the bait, followed by an awesome splash.
Over the years I have tested many different styles for Carp fishing, ranging from fly fishing all the way to boile fishing.

The Carp in our local waters always enjoy earthworms or bread. Mielies also works well and depending on the type of weather a scented dip also helps.

Bass Fishing in the Western Cape

Bass fishing in South Africa has always been great fun.

Our warm waters and great vegetation provide awesome locations for both Large and Small Mouth Bass.

This beautiful large mouth was caught in Durbanville during the summer time.

Large Mouth Bass are extremely aggressive and always provide a great fight. Their main source of food in our local dams is Blue Gills ( sun fish ) and other small fish.

Texas rigs and various types of drop shot fishing always work.
In deep waters a great double jointed Rapala crank bait also works extremely well.

Large Mouth Bass enjoy clear warm waters and reed structures. They also enjoying jumping for their pray such as flying insects and love a good challenge.

I am hoping that we can discover some more locations and test some new baits on the market.

Shark Fishing in the Western Cape

Summer is almost here and the waters of Indian Ocean are starting to warm up.
I caught this big Spotted Gully Shark last year December and I am hoping to catch a lot more.

My main target for this season is to see if I can catch a really big Bronze Whaler Shark off the Eastern Cost.

There are lots of different species of Shark in our waters which provide great recreational fishing namely, the Ragged Tooth Shark, Gully Shark, Cow Shark, Hammer Head Shark and of course our local Bronze Whaler.

I only work on a catch and release system when fishing for sharks and enjoy seeing these magnificent creatures finding their way home.

Has anyone else had experience in fishing for sharks in our local waters?

My main aim is to explore fishing locations in South Africa and upload photos.
I am hoping we can all work together and ensure these locations are looked after and not over fished.

I will be updating this blog and changing the layout during the course of the week.
